Spatial Pattern

The total area of the global water on land surface is 3.67 million km2, covering

2.73%

of the global land surface.The water area differ greatly in each continent. 75% of the land surface water is located in Asia and North America. From various latitude , the area of water in the Northern Hemisphere are mainly distributed in the middle-high latitudes; From various longitude, the area of water in the Northern Hemisphere is similar to the area of water in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • The largest country in water areas, Canada: The waters of an area of the world's largest, is about 1160000 km2, water rate of 11.6%. There are many rivers, lakes and bays, glacial erosion lake, the vast majority of river rapids and waterfalls.
  • Kingdom of thousands of lakes, Finland: Finland is honored as the thousand-lakes country. It has 187,888 lakes.
  • With highest plateau lakes, Lakes on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau: The total water reserves of lakes are about is 6080 Million m3, accounting for 70% of the total Lake water storage in China.

Land surface water has decreased by 65,000km2. There is a

decrease in past 10 years. Water has changed obviously by human activities, such as Aral Sea, Lake Chad, and the Three Gorges Reservoir area, etc.
